Atomic Canyon and Idaho National Laboratory Launch Nuclear AI Benchmark Program

Atomic Canyon has entered a strategic partnership with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to develop the first comprehensive benchmark suite for evaluating AI performance in nuclear energy applications. The program will create standardized methods for assessing how well AI models handle nuclear-specific tasks — from regulatory document retrieval to safety analysis.

Why Benchmarks Matter

As AI tools gain traction across the nuclear industry, operators and regulators need reliable ways to evaluate their accuracy, safety, and domain expertise. General-purpose AI benchmarks don’t account for the specialized language, regulatory frameworks, and safety-critical context that define nuclear operations. Without purpose-built evaluation tools, it’s difficult to compare solutions or build confidence in their outputs.

Building the Standard

INL and Atomic Canyon will co-develop evaluation datasets and testing methodologies tailored to nuclear workflows. The benchmark suite will cover retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and large language model (LLM) performance on tasks like regulatory cross-referencing, technical document search, and procedure interpretation.

This work complements Atomic Canyon’s ongoing partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which focuses on AI model development. Together, the two initiatives address both sides of the equation: building better nuclear AI models and establishing rigorous methods to measure their performance.
